Subnautica 2 gets massive success shortly after early access launch

Subnautica 2 has already become one of Steam’s biggest recent launches, reportedly surpassing 1 million copies sold shortly after entering Early Access. The sequel also managed to break the original game’s all-time concurrent player record within days of release.

According to the reported numbers, the game reached a peak of around 467,582 concurrent players on Steam, overtaking the original Subnautica’s previous peak of roughly 52,000 players by a massive margin. The sharp increase highlights just how much larger the franchise has become over the years.

The game’s Early Access launch immediately pushed it near the top of Steam’s most-played and best-selling charts, with player activity remaining extremely high throughout launch week. Much of the attention comes from the sequel’s expanded scale and the addition of full co-op gameplay, something fans had requested for years.

Unlike previous entries, Subnautica 2 allows players to explore the underwater survival world together, adding multiplayer support for the first time in the series. Combined with larger environments and planned future content updates, the sequel is aiming to significantly expand the overall experience.

Even though the game is already seeing huge numbers, development is still ongoing. The Early Access version is expected to continue growing over time with new creatures, story content, vehicles, biomes, and additional gameplay systems.

The launch is also particularly impressive considering the development concerns and studio-related controversy that surrounded the project before release. Despite that, player interest remained incredibly strong leading into launch day.

With numbers already reaching well beyond the original game’s peak, Subnautica 2 is quickly becoming one of the biggest survival game launches in recent memory.

So, do you think Subnautica 2 can maintain these player numbers long-term, or is the current momentum mostly launch hype?
