Horizon series may be getting a massive MMO spin-off

The Horizon universe has become one of PlayStation’s flagship worlds, growing far beyond its original pitch. When Horizon Zero Dawn launched in 2017, it reimagined the post-apocalyptic genre with its sweeping landscapes, tribal cultures, and towering machine creatures. Horizon Forbidden West expanded that vision even further with richer exploration, new regions, and some of the most impressive art direction of the generation. Aloy’s journey quickly became a defining symbol of modern PlayStation storytelling.

Now, a new rumor suggests the series may be stepping into completely different territory. According to a report, Sony is developing a massive online RPG set in the Horizon universe. The project, currently referred to as Horizon: Steel Frontiers, is said to be a collaboration between PlayStation Studios and NCSoft; one of the biggest MMO developers in the world.

Instead of following Aloy, players would reportedly create their own character and explore a new region called “Deathlands” alongside thousands of other players. One of the more surprising claims is that the game is being built for PC, iOS, and Android, with no mention of a PS5 version at this stage. That detail alone has sparked debate within the community.

Transforming Horizon’s cinematic storytelling and machine-filled ecosystems into an MMO is a bold challenge. It raises questions about world scale, content cadence, progression systems, and how the franchise’s identity can be preserved in a live-service format. At the same time, Sony’s push into live-service titles, combined with NCSoft’s deep roots in the global MMO market, makes this partnership strategically logical.

Nothing has been officially announced yet, but the leak suggests a reveal could arrive at G-STAR 2025.
