Rockstar Games has spent years developing some of the industry’s biggest franchises, but not every project has made it to release. Over time, several games have been canceled or quietly abandoned before reaching players, and a former Rockstar developer has now shared new insight into one of those projects.
Speaking about Midnight Club 5, the former developer claimed the racing game was ultimately canceled because it wasn’t seen as having the same importance as Grand Theft Auto.

Although the comment specifically refers to Midnight Club 5, it also highlights how Rockstar’s growing focus on its biggest franchises may have affected a number of other projects over the years.
Rockstar’s known canceled games
Several Rockstar projects have either been officially canceled or confirmed to have never moved beyond development.
- Bully 2
Perhaps Rockstar’s most famous canceled project, Bully 2 reportedly entered development multiple times before being shelved as the studio shifted resources to larger productions.
- Midnight Club 5
The long-rumored sequel to Midnight Club: Los Angeles was also abandoned. According to a former Rockstar developer, the project was canceled because it simply wasn’t considered “GTA,” making it difficult to justify continued development.
- Agent
Originally announced as a PlayStation-exclusive espionage game, Agent disappeared after years without updates before eventually being abandoned. Despite its official reveal, the project never reached release.
- Unannounced Medieval Game
Former Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser previously confirmed that the studio explored a medieval-themed game. However, the project never progressed beyond the concept phase and was never fully developed.
As Rockstar expanded franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, many smaller or experimental projects appear to have been left behind. The latest comments about Midnight Club 5 provide another example of how the studio’s development priorities have shifted over the years.
With Grand Theft Auto VI now taking center stage, there is currently no indication that any of these canceled projects—including Midnight Club, Bully, or Agent—will be revived in the near future.
