The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not only getting brand-new story content with Songs of the Past, but also a major technical update that will increase the game’s minimum PC requirements.
Following the expansion’s announcement, CD Projekt RED confirmed that future updates tied to Songs of the Past will officially end support for several older hardware and software setups on PC.
One of the biggest changes is that Windows 11 will now become the minimum required operating system moving forward. Traditional HDD storage will also no longer be officially supported, meaning players will need an SSD installed to properly run the updated version of the game.
Updated minimum PC requirements
- CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 / Intel i5-8400
- GPU: GTX 1660 / RX 5500 XT 8GB
- RAM: 12 GB
- VRAM: 6 GB
- Storage: 70 GB SSD
- OS: Windows 11 64-bit
The studio also confirmed that The Witcher 3 will now fully move over to DirectX 12 support, allowing developers to focus entirely on newer rendering technologies and future graphical improvements.
Although the changes may seem surprising for a game that originally launched back in 2015, CD Projekt RED says the updated requirements are necessary to support ongoing technical improvements and future expansion content properly.
The decision has already sparked mixed reactions online. Some players understand the shift toward modern hardware standards, while others feel the requirements are becoming too demanding for an older RPG.
Despite the hardware changes, players who cannot upgrade immediately will reportedly still have access to older versions of the game through rollback options.
Songs of the Past itself is currently planned for release in 2027 and will once again continue Geralt’s story years after Blood and Wine originally concluded his journey.
So, do you think raising the system requirements makes sense for a modern Witcher 3 expansion, or should older hardware still be supported?
