Nexus Mods has acquired SteamDB, one of the most widely used third-party platforms for tracking information about Steam games. The acquisition brings the long-running project under a larger team after more than a decade of being developed largely by its original creator, xPaw.
SteamDB started in 2013 as a small project created by xPaw and Marlamin, but its scope gradually expanded as Steam itself grew. The platform eventually became a valuable resource for players, developers and publishers, offering tools and information covering game updates, releases, prices, sales and other changes across Steam.
As the service became larger, maintaining everything independently also became increasingly demanding. xPaw had been handling much of the work himself for years, while the continuous growth of Steam meant there was an ever-expanding amount of information and platform changes to keep up with. He will now step back from managing SteamDB independently and help Nexus Mods during the transition.
Nexus Mods will provide the additional development resources and infrastructure needed to continue running SteamDB. Rather than turning the platform into a Nexus Mods feature, the plan is to keep SteamDB operating as its own service while giving it a larger team capable of supporting its long-term development.
The acquisition could also bring SteamDB’s extensive Steam data closer to the Nexus Mods ecosystem. Information about game versions and updates could eventually be used to make mod management more useful, particularly when players need to know whether a recent game update could affect their installed mods. The companies have not yet revealed exactly what these future features will look like.
For existing users, the immediate change is therefore more about who is behind SteamDB than how the website itself works. The platform will continue under the SteamDB name, while xPaw works with the new team to ensure the transition goes smoothly.
After more than 13 years of independent development, SteamDB is now entering a new phase with Nexus Mods providing the resources required to keep the project moving forward.
