The Sanctum of Mortification is one of the major witch-related areas in Crimson Desert, and it contains more than just story progression.
Alongside cleansing the sanctum itself, players can also unlock a hidden chest and obtain the valuable Mortification Core.
When does this sanctum unlock?
To access the area:
- Progress to Chapter 9
- Start the quest “Fragments of Darkness”
The sanctum is located:
- East of the Den River
Like other sanctums, the area revolves around repairing and powering a large generator.
Find the first energy piece
When you enter:
- Ignore the main generator at first
- Move deeper into the area
- Enter the side room on the right
Inside, you’ll find a key energy object.
Use:
- Your grapple ability
- Store the object inside your Cuckoo Pot
Get the second energy piece
Next:
- Move around the left side of the sanctum
- Clear the bushes blocking the entrance using Blinding Flash
Behind the gated section is another energy piece.
Again:
- Grapple the object
- Store it in the Cuckoo Pot
Restore power to the sanctum
Return to the main generator area.
Now:
- Remove both pieces from the Cuckoo Pot
- Place and align them correctly
- Use palm strikes or electricity abilities if needed
Once aligned properly, the reactor powers back up and progresses the sanctum.
Complete the Core Puzzle
After the cutscene:
- Interact with the symbol mechanism at the front
- Use Blinding Flash / Focus Light carefully
The trick is:
- Hold the light when symbols appear
- Release during empty gaps
Completing the rotation unlocks the Mortification Core.
How to get the secret chest
There’s still one hidden reward left.
From the sanctum:
- Climb the nearby elevated wall section
- Reach the gated side area
To open it:
Light both braziers
One on each side of the entrance
This unlocks the hidden room.
Inside, you’ll find:
- A secret chest
- The Autumn Banquet armor reward
The Mortification Core has an important place because:
- It’s used for advanced crafting
- Required in certain Cuckoo Pot recipes
- Valuable for later progression systems
Definitely worth collecting while you’re here.
The Sanctum of Mortification is easy to rush through, but players who explore properly can walk away with far better rewards. Between the hidden armor, Mortification Core, and puzzle mechanics, this sanctum has some of the better optional loot in Chapter 9.
And honestly, giant mystical generators powered by magical cube batteries? Peak fantasy videogame engineering. Somewhere, an electrician is crying softly into a fire rune.
