Call of Duty DMZ mode is reportedly returning

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could be reviving DMZ with a much larger focus in 2026, according to newly surfaced reports surrounding the game’s multiplayer plans.

DMZ originally launched during the Modern Warfare II era as Call of Duty’s take on the extraction shooter genre, combining missions, AI enemies, PvP combat, looting, and extraction-based gameplay inside large open maps. Although the mode developed a dedicated playerbase, support eventually slowed down as Activision shifted attention back toward Warzone.

Now, reports claim Infinity Ward is preparing a far more ambitious version of DMZ for Modern Warfare 4. Instead of feeling like a secondary side mode, the new version is reportedly being designed as a major part of the overall Call of Duty experience.

According to the leaked information, the updated DMZ could feature:

• Expanded faction systems
• More persistent progression
• Additional extraction mechanics
• Bigger PvPvE elements
• Improved long-term gear systems

The new direction reportedly aims to make DMZ feel deeper and more replayable compared to its original version, especially as extraction shooters continue growing in popularity across the industry.

Infinity Ward is also said to be focusing on a more tactical gameplay style overall in Modern Warfare 4, which could naturally fit the slower and more strategic pacing DMZ is known for.

Although Activision still hasn’t officially revealed the full mode yet, the reports suggest DMZ may finally return as a much more important feature within the franchise rather than a temporary experiment.
