Mortal Kombat II was unveiled with a brand-new trailer during New York Comic Con 2025. The trailer keeps the series’ signature dark tone while showcasing intense new fight choreography. But the biggest surprise for fans? The third Mortal Kombat movie has already been confirmed.
The new footage gives us a deeper look at Johnny Cage’s introduction to the story, revealing a version of the character that’s more “worn down and disillusioned.” According to the filmmakers, this sequel explores Cage’s transformation as his once-glamorous ego begins to crack, forcing him to become a true fighter. The cinematography embraces a noticeably darker visual style with dense fog and crimson lighting dominating the Outworld scenes.
Director Simon McQuoid describes the sequel as “more personal, yet also far more brutal” than the 2021 film, promising a grittier emotional core alongside the franchise’s trademark violence.
Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2026, but during the event, Warner Bros. also confirmed that script development for the third installment is already underway. The studio plans to complete the story as a “modern trilogy,” with potential spin-offs set in the expanded Mortal Kombat universe.
