Sony’s portable remote play device, the PS Portal, has been a hot topic among players since its launch. The handheld works by streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi, meaning it doesn’t run games natively; it simply mirrors what’s happening on your PlayStation 5. Because of that, many players have viewed it as “limited, but full of potential.”
However, that perception might soon change. According to new reports, PS Portal could soon receive a major upgrade that takes game streaming to the next level. Leaked details suggest Sony is working on a feature that would allow players to purchase and stream games directly from the PS Portal without turning on their PS5.
Leaked screenshots include the phrase “pre-order to stream and play instantly at release on PS Portal or PS5,” hinting that Sony may be developing a cloud-based system exclusive to PS Plus Premium subscribers or possibly preparing to turn the PS Portal into a standalone portable console.

When it was first announced, PS Portal was positioned solely as a Remote Play-focused device. Yet fans repeatedly questioned one thing: “Why doesn’t it support cloud gaming?” If these rumors turn out to be true, the Portal could evolve from a simple PS5 companion into a cloud-powered independent platform.
Sony has not made an official statement yet, but the rumors are growing stronger by the day. If accurate, this update could finally fix the PS Portal’s most criticized flaw; its dependence on the PS5.
So what do you think? Could PS Portal truly gain a second life with full cloud gaming support, or is this just another rumor keeping the hype alive? Share your thoughts in the comments and stay tuned to both X and VGNW for the latest updates.
