Microsoft is making another major change to the structure of its gaming division, and this time it involves one of Xbox’s most recognizable franchises. The development of the next Halo game is being moved to a new team operating under Activision.
The new team has already started working on the project and will operate separately from Activision’s existing Call of Duty development teams. The goal is to give the next Halo game a dedicated team while allowing Activision to take a larger role in Microsoft’s first-party portfolio.
Meanwhile, Halo Studios will continue operating, but its role within the franchise is changing. The studio will focus primarily on supporting existing Halo games and the current player community rather than leading development of the next mainline title.
The change is part of a broader restructuring across Microsoft’s gaming division. Several studios are being reorganized under different parts of the company, while a number of positions are also being eliminated as Microsoft continues to adjust its first-party operations.
Alongside Halo Studios, Rare and World’s Edge will also move under Activision’s management. Other Xbox studios will be placed under Bethesda and King as part of the wider restructuring.
For the next Halo game itself, details remain limited. Microsoft has not yet revealed its official title, release date, platforms, or gameplay features. The project is still in development, so it may be some time before the company is ready to show more.
For now, the biggest change is clear: Activision is taking over development of the next major Halo game, while Halo Studios shifts its attention toward supporting the existing franchise.
