Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5, revealing that the next mainline entry in the series is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2029. The surprise announcement was made during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, alongside the first details about the game’s setting and story.
Diablo 5 will take the series in a much darker direction. According to Blizzard, Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won, leaving the world in a completely different state from previous games. Rather than trying to prevent the destruction of Sanctuary, players will enter a world where the conflict has already been lost.
The game’s story will take place roughly a century after the events of Diablo 4, placing the new entry well into the future of the series. Blizzard has also teased a world with far fewer safe places, as players will have to survive in a Sanctuary that has been devastated by Diablo’s victory.
While Blizzard has not revealed extensive gameplay details yet, a dedicated Diablo 5 development panel is scheduled to provide more information about the game’s direction. More details about its story, gameplay, and other features are expected to be shared during BlizzCon.
For now, Diablo 5 is targeting a Spring 2029 release, meaning fans will have several years to wait before the next chapter of the franchise arrives. Diablo 4 will continue to receive new content in the meantime, including the previously announced Amazon class coming in 2027.
