Sony has once again made its position clear on the future of physical PlayStation games. Although thousands of fans have voiced their opposition through an online petition, the company appears determined to continue its transition toward a digital-first future.
The petition was launched after Sony announced plans to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation titles beginning in 2028. Supporters argue that physical games remain important for collectors, game preservation, and players who prefer owning their purchases instead of relying entirely on digital storefronts.
Despite those concerns, the campaign has reportedly lost momentum in recent weeks. While it gained significant attention shortly after launching, the number of new supporters has slowed, suggesting the movement is no longer growing at the same pace.
Sony, meanwhile, has not softened its stance. During its latest financial discussions, company executives reiterated that digital distribution represents the future of the PlayStation business and confirmed there are no plans to reconsider the roadmap that was previously announced.
The company believes that changes in player purchasing habits have made digital sales the dominant part of its gaming business. As a result, Sony continues to view the shift away from physical media as a long-term strategy rather than a temporary experiment.
Although many PlayStation fans remain concerned about issues such as ownership, game preservation, and the second-hand market, Sony has offered no indication that it intends to reverse course.
