EA Sports has offered the first detailed look at EA Sports FC 27’s gameplay, revealing a long list of changes that aim to make matches feel more skill-driven. Rather than introducing one major mechanic, this year’s update focuses on refining almost every part of the on-pitch experience, from defending and attacking movement to passing, crossing, and player individuality.
Many of the adjustments are designed to reduce the impact of automated systems while giving players more direct control over key moments. EA says the latest gameplay improvements are based heavily on community feedback collected throughout FC 26’s lifecycle.
- Manual defending takes center stage
Defending has received one of the biggest overhauls in FC 27. Automatic defensive interventions have been reduced, meaning players will need to rely more on positioning, timing, and manual tackles instead of letting AI defenders recover the ball on their own
At the same time, manual defending has been made quicker and more responsive, rewarding players who actively control their defenders instead of depending on assisted mechanics. - Attacking players make smarter runs
Off-the-ball movement has been updated to create more realistic attacking opportunities. Forwards now react faster to open spaces, time their runs more effectively, and pay closer attention to the offside line before making forward movements.
These improvements are intended to create more natural attacking patterns without forcing players to trigger
every run themselves. - Passing encourages better decision-making
Ground passes and through balls have also been adjusted to place greater importance on player input. Accurate passing now depends more on timing and direction, making build-up play feel less automated while rewarding well-executed passes.
EA has also improved player movement after releasing the ball, allowing teammates to continue supporting attacks instead of stopping immediately after making a pass. - Set pieces offer more tactical freedom
Corner kicks now provide additional tactical options before the ball is delivered into the penalty area. Players have more control over positioning, attacking runs, and player switching, making set pieces feel less predictable and more strategic. - Crossing and heading receive significant tweaks
Wide play has become more effective in FC 27, with crosses expected to create more meaningful attacking opportunities. However, finishing those chances won’t necessarily be easier.
Headers now require better timing and positioning than before. While clean connections are more accurate, poorly timed attempts are less likely to produce dangerous shots. - Physical battles feel more important
Players with strong shielding abilities can now protect possession more effectively, even when defenders apply heavy pressure. Physical duels have been reworked to better reward strength, balance, and ball control during close contests. - Player ratings have greater influence
EA has increased the impact of individual player attributes throughout gameplay. Rather than relying heavily on PlayStyles, overall ratings and core attributes now play a larger role in determining how footballers perform in different situations.
PlayStyles remain part of the experience, but their influence has been reduced to create a more balanced gameplay environment.
EA says additional Deep Dive presentations covering other game modes will be released ahead of FC 27’s launch, offering players a closer look at the rest of this year’s improvements.
What is the biggest gameplay change?
The most notable changes include reduced AI defending, stronger manual defending, smarter attacking movement, updated passing mechanics, and a greater emphasis on player attributes.
