SteelSeries Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 is one of the newest models in the brand’s wireless mouse lineup. In a time when there are countless wireless mouse alternatives on the market, some of the features SteelSeries offers stand out. Recently, while looking for a wireless mouse suitable for both gaming and everyday use, I had the chance to test the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 in detail. In this review, I’ll share my experiences with the device, discussing not only its technical specs but also the practical differences I noticed during daily use. So without further ado, let’s dive into the review.
Design
Starting with the design of the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2, at first glance, we’re met with a simple yet refined aesthetic. Featuring an ABS plastic body with a matte textured finish, the mouse delivers a solid grip, while its overall weight varies depending on the number of batteries used. Weighing 83.5 grams without batteries, the mouse reaches 95 grams with a single AAA battery and up to 106 grams with two, and it's worth noting that the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 can operate with just one battery for those who prefer a lighter setup. You can opt for a lighter experience with a single battery or go for a heavier feel by using two batteries, it's entirely up to your preference.
In terms of weight, the mouse offers flexibility, but beyond that, it features a symmetrical design that's optimized specifically for right-handed users. When it comes to grip styles, it’s particularly well-suited for fingertip and claw grip users. As someone who typically uses a fingertip grip, I experienced no wrist or hand fatigue during extended use. However, for palm grip users, the mouse might feel a bit too short and narrow, so it may not be the most ideal choice for those who prefer a full-hand grip.
While the overall design remains similar to the first generation, the Gen 2 model introduces a more durable polymer material and a redesigned split-trigger click mechanism that enhances longevity. Another notable improvement is the expanded color variety, alongside the classic black and white options, the mouse is now also available in more playful shades like lavender and aqua.
The Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 features a total of six programmable buttons, each of which can be customized through the SteelSeries GG software. You can assign different functions based on the games you play and even save custom profiles directly to the mouse’s onboard memory. This means your settings travel with you, no need to install any software when switching between different computers.
Performance
Equipped with the TrueMove Air sensor developed in collaboration with PixArt, the Rival 3 Wireless Gen 2 boasts impressive specs including 18,000 DPI, 400 IPS tracking speed, and 40G acceleration. Although this sensor is the same as the one used in the original Rival 3 Wireless, software optimizations and the addition of new 100% PTFE skates have significantly improved the glide experience. Additionally, click latency has been greatly reduced, dropping to just 1.9 milliseconds.
With Quantum 2.0 Wireless technology, the mouse offers both a low-latency 2.4GHz connection and Bluetooth 5.0 support, allowing it to work smoothly not just on PCs but also on mobile devices and laptops.
Moreover, there’s a significant improvement in battery life. While the Gen 1 model offered over 400 hours of use, the Gen 2 extends this to 450 hours in Bluetooth mode. In 2.4GHz mode, it provides around 200 hours of usage. The fact that it runs on replaceable AAA batteries might be a downside for some—requiring you to remove and replace batteries regularly. However, not having to worry about cables or battery degradation is a definite plus.
