Assassin’s Creed Shadows hasn’t even cooled off yet, but Ubisoft is already talking about what its creative choices might mean for the franchise’s future. One of the biggest talking points around Shadows has been its two-hero structure; a design decision that sparked excitement in some corners of the community and frustration in others.
Despite that mixed reaction, Ubisoft isn’t backing away from the idea. In fact, the studio suggests it may continue experimenting with dual protagonists in future Assassin’s Creed games, as long as the concept is meaningfully justified by the story and setting.
The message came directly from associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois, who reflected on what the team learned from Shadows’ reception. Speaking about the dual-protagonist setup, he said:
“I think the learning for us is that, yes, we could do more dual-protagonist games in the future; if we have a good reason to do it narratively and for the setting.”
His comments also acknowledge how divided the AC community has been. Shadows’ two-hero structure gave players contrasting backgrounds and playstyles, but it also raised familiar debates about pacing, emotional focus, and whether the series works best with a single, central protagonist. Ubisoft knows not every player will connect with both leads, yet the studio still believes the format has strong creative potential.
Overall, Ubisoft seems to be signaling flexibility rather than a new rule. Dual protagonists won’t become the standard, but the team is willing to bring them back when the era or narrative needs it. They remain confident in the experiment, and the developers have hinted that several systems and storytelling frameworks introduced in Shadows may evolve further in future titles.

Does this mean every new AC game will have two leads?
No. Ubisoft says the choice will depend on whether it serves the story, world, and historical context.
