Block-based games have long been shaped primarily by systems and algorithms, but Hytale appears ready to rewrite that formula. In a new statement, Simon Collins-Laflamme revealed that the team’s latest approach to world generation represents a fundamental change for the genre.
According to Collins-Laflamme, Hytale’s evolving tools will allow artists and game designers to take full ownership of world creation for the first time, with complete control over the final result. This marks a clear departure from worlds defined almost entirely by programmers, instead placing creative intent and design vision at the center of the experience.
In line with this philosophy, Hytale is preparing to expand its development team with a brand-new role rarely seen in block-based games: World Designer. Following the game’s early access release, the studio plans to hire more than 15 World Designers, with positions largely filled from within the community. Artists and designers will be able to learn, create, and apply using the same internal tools the developers themselves use.
Hytale’s goal is to deliver worlds that feel carefully handcrafted while remaining infinitely procedural, ensuring that design choices always serve gameplay first. The ambitions stretch well beyond Orbis as well. The team plans to explore alternate worlds, new dimensions, and entirely different spaces, opening the door to fresh blocks, items, prefabs, zones, regions, biomes, NPCs, quests, and storylines.
With Hytale embracing a community-driven and design-first approach, the project could mark a turning point for the entire block-game genre. Allowing artists and designers to shape worlds directly may redefine how players experience procedural environments.
